Curriculum
Schoolyard Inquiry: trap, measure and research the plants and arthropods found outside
your door!
Schoolyard Ecology Explorations (SEE) has developed
a new curriculum centered on utilizing schoolyards for sites of science investigations.
The curriculum was designed by teachers and scientists who conduct field research.
The 41 lessons address issues of sustainability and ecology through plant and insect
investigations that are linked to broader issues such as the health of an ecosystem.
The guide includes extensive background and practical tips for capturing, rearing
and experimenting with local insects. Because nature is of interest and importance
to students of all ages, the guide has lessons for students in grades K-12. Many
lessons can be adapted for older and younger students by allowing for greater independence
for older students. In 2008, the first edition was printed. In 2009, a revised edition
is available for sale at the Monarch Store.
