Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants. But milkweed is disappearing from its prime habitat: Midwestern farm fields. A new study by Karen Oberhauser and her Iowa State colleague John Pleasants ties a decade-long decline in monarch populations to the loss of milkweed from the corn and soybean fields that blanket the region. We invite your attendance at a 2.5-day meeting, June 21-23, 2012, at the University of Minnesota’s Landscape Arboretum. This meeting will be an opportunity for monarch biologists, agency land managers, monarch conservationists, citizen scientists, and others interested in monarch biology and conservation to share information on monarch population trends, new findings in monarch biology, and successful monarch conservation efforts. It will include speaking and poster sessions, field trips, workshops, and plenty of time for informal sharing and networking.
